PAN - 1970 On The Air (DR. SESSIONS) (Denmark,Psych Rock Blues 1970)

Pan
Robert Lelievre - vocals, guitars

Thomas Puggaard-Muller - lead guitar
Henning Verner - piano, organ, vibes
Arne Wurgler - bass, cello
Michael Puggaard-Muller - drums

Album:
Pan - Pan 1970
(Sonet SLP1518Reissued on CD by Little Wing (LW 5032) in 1993 (ltd. ed. 1000) and on an unknown label with two bonus tracks, "In A Simple Way", "Ride Across My Bed", NL001. )
Robert Lelievre had previously played folk music in the trio Cy, Maia & Robert, while the Puggaard-Muller brothers came from the blues-rock group Delta Blues Band. Their collective past gave no indication of the sophisticated sound of Pan. The band's eponymous album is one of those tightly-arranged and strictly produced efforts, polished to make Lelievre's songs shine. Most of the tracks blend various styles of rock, folk, jazz and small drops of classical and gospel into a strong and potent brew - it strikes me each time I hear it just how homogenous and forceful it is. Knowing the entertainment business, it will come as no surprise that such an intelligent and emotional album met little commercial success. Disenchanted, the group broke up within months. Robert Lelievre attempted to establish a solo career but Sonet left a completed 1971 album unreleased. It was scheduled for release in 1980 on Sonet's series of double album re-issues (coupled with the Pan album), but this re-issue programme was terminated due to low sales, and it didn't make it onto vinyl this time either. This is symptomatic for a man who'd had plenty more bad luck in the past. After his 1968 album with Iain Campbell, he had completed an album (helped by Brian Auger and John McLaughlin, amongst others) for Giorgio Gomelsky's Marmalade label. For unknown reasons, it was never released. Lelievre committed suicide in Copenhagen 26th August, 1974. An ignorant world lost one of the most talented songwriters of his generation.

PAN ON THE AIR - (1970/2004)
"Pan On The Air" was released by Karma Music in 2004, and features live Pan recordings from two separate 1970 Danish Radio shows, produced by Erik Moseholm and Freddy Hansson. CD re-production by Tomrerclaus, with extensive liner notes from Claus Rasmussen. The tracklisting includes the following five original Robert Lelievre compositions: "Far Away From Home", "Freedom", "Time", "Deliverance", and "If I Was Another Man", plus one song written with Niels Skousen - "From A Tree". The band also play a cover of Woody Guthrie's "I Ain't Got No Home (Ramblin' Man)", and the traditional "I Cannot Keep From Crying". Lambchop - What Another Man Spills (US 1998)

Lambchop, originally Posterchild, is a band from Nashville, Tennessee. Lambchop is loosely associated with the alternative country genre, though its music resists easy classification. The music website Allmusic refers to them as "arguably the most consistently brilliant and unique American group to emerge during the 1990s". Never a band with a "core" lineup, Lambchop through the years has consisted of a large and fluid collective of musicians focused around its creative centre, frontman Kurt Wagner. Initially indebted to traditional country, the music has subsequently moved through a range of influences including post-rock, soul and lounge music.

Whatever the style, the characteristic mood of Lambchop's music is evoked by Wagner's distinctive songwriting - lyrically subtle and ambiguous, the vocals melodic but understated. Setting this apart from other minimalist songwriters is the large group of backing musicians, with the range of instruments and styles that it brings. Wagner's songwriting bears similarities with soul musicians such as Barry White, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye as much as with country and folk music, and can be seen to embody Kris Kristofferson’s dictum that “country music is the white man’s soul”.(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

I've Been Lonely For So Long :
Won't somebody help me please
'Cause I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come along
I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come along
These ain't clouds rain over my head
Everybody's throwing rocks in my bed
Just can't seem to get ahead in life
Nothing
I do ever turn out right
Won't somebody help me please
'Cause I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come along
I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come alongI lay awake every night
Trying to figure out how to make things right
There's got to be a better way
I knowTo shake this monkey off 'cause it's making me so
Won't somebody help me please
'Cause I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come along
I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come along
Yes I know what it feels like to be lonely
To have your friends turn their backs on you
Yes I've been lonely
Never know the real meaning of peace and harmony, yeah
I lay awake most every night
Trying to figure out how to make things right
There's got to be a better way I knowTo shake this monkey off
"cause it's making me so
Won't somebody help me please
'Cause I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come along
I've been lonely for so long
Don't seem like happiness will come along

Δικαίωμα στο Ονειρο

Erik Satie - Gnossiennes No.1

Don Sugarcane Harris - 1973 Cup Full Of Dreams[Harvey Mandel & Tongue & Groove]

Biography
by Steve Kurutz
Beginning his career as the guitar playing half of the 1950s rock duo, Don & Dewey, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, put down the guitar and picked up the violin after the lack of success for Don & Dewey (oddly enough the group's songs became hits for other artists such as the Righteous Brothers and the Premiers).
Classically trained as a violinist, Harris' skill at improvisation began attracting attention from the rock world and soon he was appearing on records by John Lee Hooker, Frank Zappa and Johnny Otis. In 1970 Harris joined forces with British blues musician John Mayall when the latter was forming his first all American backing band.
In addition to joining the backing bands of Mayall, Zappa and others, Harris also recorded a series of albums for labels such as Epic and Polydor. After a lengthy battle with pulmonary disease, on December 1, 1999 he was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment at the age of 61.

Album Review
by Ken Dryden
Blues violinist Sugarcane Harris is on fire during this 1973 studio session for BASF, which features many of his regular collaborators of the period.
Harris, who wrote all of the material heard on the date, mixes elements of jazz, country, and rock into his brand of blues. He is brilliant in the midtempo blues "Runnin' Away," though none of the solos that follow measure up to the leader's. "Hattie's Bathtub" is a catchy blues waltz. But it is the extended composition "Cup Full of Dreams" that showcases Harris' lyricism on his instrument.
One amusing aspect of the LP is the obvious presence of guitarist Harvey Mandel, who evidently could not be named for contractual reasons, though his photo is barely disguised with an old-fashioned black bar over his eyes.
Just a few years after this record was released, poor health put an end to the violinist's career. Sadly, this record is long out of print and somewhat hard to find.

Don "Sugarcane" Harris: violin
Dewey Terry: electric piano & percussion
Randy Resnik, Victor Conte Jr. & Harvey Mandel: guitar
Larry Tayor: electric bass
Paul Lagos: drums
1.- Runnin' Away (8.00)
2.- Hattie's Bathtub (7.23)
3.- Bad Feet (5.21)
4.- Cup Full of Dreams (14.24)

Deva Premal - 2007 - Moola Mantra ( Meditation Chakra Chants Indian Folk)

The Moola Mantra (moola - root) is inspired by the vision of avatars Sri Bhagavan and Sri Amma. Their vision of oneness is a Oneness which honours all spiritual paths, religions, creeds and traditions. I offer this music as a gift to these beautiful beings, who have showered their grace on me with such loving abundance. It is with their blessings that this recording came to be. I see unity-in-diversity as the only way for humanity to live in harmony, and the Moola Mantra is an expression of this understanding.I dedicate this album to my beloved Guruji, Osho.Om shanti,~ Deva ~
Deva Premal's groundbreaking new release features an extended presentation of the beautiful Moola Mantra, which was received by Deva and Miten during a meditation retreat at the Oneness University in Chennai, India.
It honours the divine light in every living being and celebrates the dance of female/ male energies as they merge into union.
Produced by Ben Leinbach, the Moola Mantra meanders like a sacred river through a lush landscape of sitars, bansuri, dotar, grand piano, tablas, cello and string quartet, with Deva's golden voice leading the way, flowing finally into an ocean of silence.

Special guest musicians include Miten (vocals), Jai Uttal (dotar), Manose (bansuri), Debopriyo Sarkar (tablas), Kit Walker (piano), Benjy Wertheimer (esraj), Peter van Gelder (sitar), and Moses Sedler (cello). Read the reviews.

Deva Premal (born in 1970 in Nürnberg Germany), is a musician known for her meditative spiritual New Age music, which puts ancient Sanskrit mantras into atmospheric, contemporary settings.

Deva has toured since 1991, along with her life partner, Miten, offering concerts and chant workshops worldwide. Their record company, Prabhu Music, reports sales of over 900,000 albums.

Best-known for her top-selling chant CDs, Deva Premal is a classically trained musician. She grew up singing mantras in a German home permeated with Eastern spirituality. Her albums have topped the New Age charts and popularity polls in yoga studios and healing centers throughout the world since her first release, The Essence, featuring the Gayatri Mantra. Her latest album, Mantras For Precarious Times, which features Deva chanting seven different mantras 108 times each, was created as a support for mantra meditation. She and Miten have also recently released a CD/DVD In Concert: The Yoga of Song and Chant, featuring a concert recorded live in Byron Bay, Australia with Nepalese bansuri flautist Manose.

Deva and Miten performed for The Dalai Lama during a 2002 Conference in Munich, Germany on Unity and Duality, which brought top figures from the scientific community together with members of the Buddhist community. They gave a concert for the full conference, and were also invited to sing for the Dalai Lama at a small pre-conference gathering. They had heard that his favorite mantra was the Tara Mantra, dedicated to the Green Tara of Compassion, and that he had asked for it be chanted recently when he was ill, and so they chanted it for him.

Deva began her journey with mantra in her mother's womb, as her father chanted the Gayatri Mantra, one of most sacred mantra of Hinduism, to her daily, and it continued to be her bedtime lullaby after she was born. Many years later, she heard a friend singing the Gayatri and was inspired to put together an album featuring it. She and Miten recorded The Essence in her mother's apartment in Germany, the same one in which she was born and where her parents had sung the Gayatri Mantra to her years before.

Deva brought this journey with the Gayatri Mantra full circle in July, 2005, when she and Miten chanted the Gayatri for her father as he was dying: "We kept singing for what must have been over half an hour, when suddenly the monitor showed that he was about to leave. I continued to sing and the last sound he heard as he passed on was his beloved Gayatri Mantra. Finally we ended with the mantra Om and the circle was complete. He had welcomed me onto this planet with the Gayatri and I accompanied him out of this physical existence with it. What a blessing this was for me! It was the first time that I was present at a death, and to be at my father's is a memory I will cherish all my life.

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda w.Pharoah Sanders (Impulse Records 1970)Psychedelic Indian Jazz Blows your Mind!! Oracle!!!

''I hope that this album will be a form of meditation and a spiritual awakening for those who listen with their inner ear.Om Shanti."

Review
by Thom Jurek AMG
The CD reissue of Alice Coltrane's landmark Journey to Satchidananda reveals just how far the pianist and widow of John Coltrane had come in the three years after his death. The compositions here are wildly open and droning figures built on whole tones and minor modes. And while it's true that one can definitely hear her late husband's influence on this music, she wouldn't have had it any other way. Pharoah Sanders' playing on the title cut, "Shiva-Loka," and "Isis and Osiris" (which also features the Vishnu Wood on oud and Charlie Haden on bass) is gloriously restrained and melodic. Coltrane's harp playing, too, is an element of tonal expansion as much as it is a modal and melodic device. With a tamboura player, Cecil McBee on bass, Rashied Ali on drums, and Majid Shabazz on bells and tambourine, tracks such as "Stopover Bombay" and the D minor modally drenched "Something About John Coltrane" become exercised in truly Eastern blues improvisation. Sanders plays soprano exclusively, and the interplay between it and Coltrane's piano and harp is mesmerizing. With the drone factor supplied either by the tamboura or the oud, the elongation of line and extended duration of intervallic exploration is wondrous. The depths to which these blues are played reveal their roots in African antiquity more fully than any jazz or blues music on record, a tenet that exists today over 30 years after the fact. One last note, the "Isis and Osiris" track, which was recorded live at the Village Gate, features some of the most intense bass and drum interplay — as it exists between Haden and Ali — in the history of vanguard jazz. Truly, this is a remarkable album, and necessary for anyone interested in the development of modal and experimental jazz. It's also remarkably accessible.

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda w.Pharoah Sanders
"Direct inspiration for Journey in Satchidananda comes from my meeting and association with someone who is near and dear to me. I am speaking of my own beloved spiritual perceptor, Swami Satchidananda. Swamiji is the first example I have seen in recent years of Universal Love or God in action. He expresses an impersonal love, which encompasses thousands of people. Anyone listening to this selection should try to envision himself floating on an ocean of Satchidanandaji's love, which is literally carrying countless devotees across the vicissitudes and stormy blasts of life to the other shore. Satchidananda means knowledge, existence, bliss.Shiva is God, in one of his myriad forms, as the third person of the Hindu Trinity, in his aspect as dissolver of creation. Loka means realm or abode. I try to stretch my mind thoughts over to Shiva-Loka, one of the highest points of the universe.Bombay will be the first stop on my five-week stay in India beginning in December, 1970. I will be visiting New Delhi, Reshikesh, Madras, and the country of Ceylon. Hence the title Stopover Bombay.I know that there remains to this very day something inexplicable and undefinable about John Coltrane. Something About John Coltrane is set on a d-minor mode, and will not be unfamiliar to John's followers. It is played beautifully.Pharoah's playing on this album sounds transcendental, reflecting the ancient, sacred sound. I believe that his music is one of the strongest forces of its kind being heard in the world today. I feel that Cecil McBee's offering here is highly stimulating and selective in its entirety, and that his technical capabilities have reached the point that allow his music to transcend the limitations of standardized forms of bass playing. Two uncommon instruments can be heard on this album. Tulsi's tamboura, a four-stringed Indian drone instrument, is played with as high a degree of sensivity as any I have heard from any instrumentalist native to the East. The oud, played by Vishnu, is basically a North African instrument, played all along the Mediterranean, and can be heard in music from places as diverse as Morocco, Persia, Turkey, and Egypt. On Isis and Osiris, I appreciate the contribution of Charlie Haden, the bassist who has been associated with Ornette Coleman for so many years. Vishnu's oud playing is characterized by his sympathetic understanding of the music of North Africa. Rashied Ali here, as he does throughout the album, provides a continuous stream of pure sound energy. I would also like to compliment Majid on the characteristic coloristic flavors he adds to these performances.I hope that this album will be a form of meditation and a spiritual awakening for those who listen with their inner ear.Om Shanti."
