What happened to a sense of wonder..

And we walked the pagan streams
And searched for white horses on surrounding hills
We lived where dusk had meaning
And repaired to quiet sleep, where noise abated
In touch with the silence
On Honey Street, on Honey Street

What happened to a sense of wonder
On yonder hillside, getting dim
Why didn't they leave us, alone
Why couldn't we just be ourselves
We could dream, and keep bees
And live on Honey Street

And we walked the pagan streams
In meditation and contemplation
And we didn't need anybody, or anything
Then, no concepts, being free
And I wanna climb that hillside again, with you

One more time

As the great, great, great, great, great, great, great
Being watches over
And we repair, repair, repair, shhh, repair, shhh, we repair

Don Van Vliet "Captain Beefheart" passed away R.I.P. (1941~2010)

Terrible news: Don Van Vliet, the stupendous avant-garde bluesman, surrealist painter, and world-class eccentric, has died, as confirmed to multiple outlets by a rep from the Michael Werner Gallery, which often showed his work. He would've turned 70 in January. The engine behind unclassifiable and inimitable critic-beloved masterpieces like 1969's Trout Mask Replica and 1978's Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), the California native has been personally mostly off the grid for decades, content to tend to his painting in relative seclusion while his former cohort Gary Lucas toured the world spreading the Beefheart gospel himself. Hopefully he keeps doing it.

from The Village Voice

Have you heard that rumor that's goin' around
You got a man, way across town
It's the same old story, tell me where does it end
Yes I heard the news, it's the same old blues again
...
When I wrote you a letter, you must have read it wrong
I stood at your doorway but she were gone
I took a lot of time 'n let your telephone ring
It's the same old blues, it's the same old blues again

When you gave me the business, you [.?.] I didn't mind
'cause I got a lot of patience 'n I got a lot of time
It's the same old story, tell me where does it end
It's the same old blues, it's the same old blues again

Gonna find me a mountain, gonna hide it out
Ain't talkin' to you 'n I ain't comin' out
Yes I heard the rumor, tell me where does it end
It's the same old blues, it's the same old blues again

Oooooh, oh baby baby
What you make me do
I don't know where I am
It's the same old blues, same old blues again
Whoooooooah, oh oh oh .

Dorothy Gilman (The Bells of Freedom 1963)

If something
anticipated arrives
too late
it finds us numb,
wrung out from waiting,
and we feel – nothing at all.
The best things arrive on time.”

Dorothy Gilman (The Bells of Freedom 1963)

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

Mavis Staples - You Are Not Alone

You're not alone

 I'm with you
I'm lonely too

What's that song
Can't be sung
By two?

A broken home
A broken heart
Isolated and afraid

Open up this is a raid
I wanna get it through to you
You're not alone
You're not alone

Every night
I stand in your place
Every tear
On every face
Tastes the same

A broken dream
A broken heart
Isolated and afraid
Open up this is a raid

I wanna get it through to you
You're not alone
Bridge
An open hand
An open heart

There's no need to be afraid
Open up this is a raid
I wanna get it through to you
You're not alone
I wanna get it through to you
You're not alone
I'm gonna get it through to you
You're not alone

The Strawberry Statement 1970 (''Φράουλες και αίμα'')

Tον Aπρίλιο του '68 καταλαμβάνουν το πανεπιστήμιο της Kολούμπια στη Nέα Yόρκη, εκφράζοντας την ολοκληρωτική απόρριψη του ιμπεριαλισμού των HΠA.

John Lennon December 8,1980 30 years before - Year of Peace

In 1969, John Lennon married performance artist Yoko Ono, but while many couples would use their first year together to put their house in order, John and Yoko instead opted to use their celebrity and the media attention focused on their wedding to speak to the world about their favorite cause -- world peace. From their famous "bed-in for peace" to meetings with several of the world's political leaders, the couple created what they once described as an "advertising campaign for Peace" while the War in Vietnam raged on; it was a possibly naive but inarguably heartfelt gesture towards making the world a better place which solidified the couple's reputation as global activists. John & Yoko's Year Of Peace is a documentary produced for Canadian television which presents archival footage of Lennon and Ono's anti-war crusade, and interviews with Ono and her friends and contemporaries in which they recall the whirlwind peace campaign; speaking with Lennon and Ono in the newsreel segments are cartoonist Al Capp, media theorist Marshall McLuhan, and then-Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, among others. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

John Lennon A Documentary

The film explores the political activism that Lennon became strongly involved in with the Beatles and after the band ended.

John Lennon is established as being a potential political threat to the American government, and therefore much of the film covers the theme of 'silencing' him and other popular figures that became involved in anti-war activism. Throughout the film the audience can see both sides of the situation: the audience sees the protests and events Lennon and Yoko Ono organised, such as the famous "Give Peace A Chance" rally and concepts such as bagism and bed peace.

R.I.P. Reg King (The Action, Blossom Toes, B.B. Blunder ,Mighty Baby)

Reg King, frontman for the influential 1960s Mod band the Action died of cancer on Monday, Nov. 8, the UK's Independent reports. King, who has been publicly acknowledged as an influence by both Paul Weller and Phil Collins, was 65.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reg_King

The Action, whose music was largely derived from soul and R&B, formed in 1963 and were known initially as the Boys. The band first backed singer Sandra Berry on the King-penned 1964 single 'Really Gonna Shake' before recording their own single debut, 'It Ain't Fair' later that year.

The acclaim of that single, also written by King, earned the band the interest of Beatles producer George Martin, who signed the group -- which also counted drummer Roger Powell, Alan "Bam" King, bassist Mike "Ace" Evans and rhythm guitarist Peter Watson -- to Parlophone in 1965. After a name change, the Action had a run of UK hits with blue-eyed soul renditions of popular songs like Cannibal and the Headhunters' 'Land of a Thousand Dances,' the Marvellettes' 'I'll Keep on Holding On' and the Radiants' 'Baby You've Got It.'

In 1967, under King's direction, the group shifted back to originals, writing its fourth single, 'Never Ever'/'Twenty Fourth Hour.' For its fifth and final A-side, the band changed gears to deliver the psychedelic rock number 'Shadows and Reflections.' Although King left the band later that year, his former bandmates backed him on his eponymous 1971 solo album that featured guest appearances by Steve Winwood and the Rolling Stones' Mick Taylor.

Although 'Reg King' stalled commercially, renewed interest in the cult figure prompted a CD reissue in 2006. The band reunited in 2000, with King's final performance occurring at 2004's Modstock.(from Spinner)

Reg King belonged to the Action, Mighty Baby, Blossom Toes, B.B. Blunder family tree, leaving the Action before they became Mighty Baby and performing with (ex-Blossom Toes) B.B. Blunder after releasing this acclaimed and rare solo record.

Members from the bands above would form the backbone for this project, recorded over three years and guesting Stevie Winwood on keys. The Action had cut their teeth covering Motown soul during the mid 60s and those influences had not gone amiss for this LP, albeit through distorted guitars and stoney jams. The leadoff track “Must Be Something Else Around” is a blistering slice of hard English rock that probably gave Led Zep a brief jolt of anxiety. “That Ain’t Living” has the explosive impatience of certain tracks I know from The Action, but add this album’s key ingredient: raw and relentless blue-eyed soul, propelled by Reg King’s voice – probably the best of the British hard-rock-soul singers.

It’s not a grand slam on the other hand. I’m not much of a blues-hound, so “Down The Drain,” or six-minutes of predictable blues doesn’t do it for me. But “That Ain’t Living” pushes hard through a fully worthwhile six of spirited rock. There are a couple less memorable tracks, but the good hooks make this record worth a spin. Perhaps a good introduction to the Action family tree .

Tony Curtis (R.I.P.)

Actor Tony Curtis, who died yesterday at the age of 85, was Hollywood royalty when he co-starred with future 007 Roger Moore in the UK adventure series The Persuaders, which ran one season from 1971 to 1972. Curtis was the upstart Yankee Danny Wilde, Moore was the fussy Brit Lord Brett Sinclair, and together they were suave, middle-aged "international playboys" who flashed cash, bedded beautiful babes, and, yes, solved mysteries.

While the show fared OK with British TV viewers, it was not a U.S. success, but it has become a cult classic of early '70s cool.

Here are the show's very colorful opening titles, which, without any voiceover, fills you in on the men's entire backstories in split screen:
http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/23/anglophenia.jsp?bc_id=1863

Curtis died at his Las Vegas (Henderson, Nevada) home on September 29, 2010, of an apparent cardiac arrest
In a release to the Associated Press,
his daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, stated:

"My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages. He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world. He will be greatly missed.."

Goodbye Mr.Curtis..

Director Arthur Penn dies at age 88

The Outsider : Arthur Penn's decades-long struggle against the Hollywood machine
by Michael Chaiken and Paul Cronin  posted June 4, 2008

In his 50 years within the American film industry, Arthur Penn's changing fortunes have rivaled those of the greatest characters in his own films.

Born in Philadelphia in 1922, Penn grew up during the Depression, spending his childhood divided between the city of his birth and, after his parents' divorce in 1925, New York. The dislocation of Penn's home life, coupled with the stigma of being a child of divorce, would have a profound and lasting effect on his psychological and emotional development. Moving among comedy, tragedy, realism, and absurdity (sometimes within the same story), his films address the traumas of childhood and adolescence through characters whose lack of self-evident identity is circumscribed by the impersonal social forces governing their lives.(read more here)

Arthur Penn, left, with the actors Warren Beatty and Alexandra Stewart, during rehearsals for the film “Mickey One” in 1964 (from.nytimes.com)

Penn, Arthur Hiller, 1922-, American director, brother of Irving Penn, b. Philadelphia; studied Black Mountain College and the Actors' Studio, Los Angeles. Penn, who often deals with themes of alienation in American life, began directing for television during the late 1940s. His Broadway credits include Two for the Seesaw (1958), The Miracle Worker (1959, Tony Award; film, 1962), and Toys in the Attic (1960). His first film, The Left-Handed Gun (1958), a psychologically probing study of Billy the Kid, was also an adaptation of a television drama. Penn's masterpiece, Bonnie and Clyde (1967), is a darkly brilliant study of the Depression-era outlaws that combines high drama with comedy, social comment, and extreme violence. Displaying an offbeat take on several screen genres, his other movies include Micky One (1965), Alice's Restaurant (1969), Little Big Man (1960), Night Moves (1975), and The Missouri Breaks (1976). Among his later, less commercially successful films are Four Friends (1981), Dead of Winter (1987), and Inside (1996).

Bonnie Parker is bored with life and wants a change. She gets her chance when she meets a charming young drifter by the name of Clyde Barrow. Clyde has dreams of a life of crime that will free him from the hardships of the Depression. The two fall in love and begin a crime spree that extends from Oklahoma to Texas. They rob small banks with skill and panache, soon becoming minor celebrities known across the country. People are proud to have been held up by Bonnie and Clyde; to their victims, the duo is doing what nobody else has the guts to do. To the law, the two are evil bank robbers who deserve to be gunned down where they stand. Written by filmfactsman (IMDb.com)

Arthur A. Penn (not to be confused with Arthur Hiller Penn )wrote both the words and music to "Smilin' Through" in 1919--he was inspired by a Broadway play of the same title which captured the heady, Wilsonian optimism following the First World War.
Many artists recorded the song in following years, but perhaps none resonated so well with her times and audience than did Britain's Vera Lynn, joined by Jay Wilbur and his Serenaders in this Second World War performance.

SMILIN' THROUGH
There's a little brown road windin' over the hill
To a little white cot by the sea
There's a little green gate
At whose trellis I wait
While two eyes o' blue
Come smilin' through at me

There's a gray lock or two in the brown of the hair
There's some silver in mine too, I see
But in all the long years
When the clouds brought their tears
Those two eyes o' blue
Kept smilin' through at me

And if ever I'm left in this world all alone
I shall wait for my call patiently
For if Heaven be kind
I shall wait there to find
Those two eyes o' blue
Come smilin' through at me...
