George Pilali & The Blues Caravan - GodComedy (Greek Rock Underground ,surrealistic lyrics, blues and rembetiko)

Λάτρης -με τα όλα του- του King of the Blues Albert King...

(Ilan Solomon)

Georges Pilali
Since the beginning of the 80’s Georges Pilali is a mythical figure of the Athenian underground scene. His songs are combination of surrealistic lyrics, blues and rembetiko (music of Greek underground, formed in major cities in the early 20th century).
Georges Pilali was a first musician in Greece who showed that rembetico and blues have followed parallel roads and their combination could be fascinating experience.
He has recorded three (out of print!!) albums, having also participated in the records of other Greek musicians and singers. His latest album “Theokomodia”, 1994, includes the participation of Albanian street musicians, Greek beat poetry and also the great American blues singers Louisiana Red και Big Time Sarah.
His performance includes theatrical elements (from ancient Greek theatre “Karagiozis”- modern theatre of shadow), poetry and music, blended all together with a unique sense of humor. He has successfully appeared in concerts, clubs and festivals in Greece, Canada, USA and France.

During the last years, he cooperates on stage with the veteran of the Greek rock scene Dimitris Poulikakos, the French roman guitarist Philippe "Doudou" Guillerier and the fabulous American guitarist and researcher of world music Bob Brozman.
George Pilali’s group consists of 6 musicians (guitar, santoor, accordion, violin, percussion and acoustic bass).
‘Mr Pilali is a very good and tasteful slide player who is the equal of many more famous musicians. The use of the Greek instruments in blues added new feeling’.
(Bruce Iglauer, Alligator records)
George Pilali: ‘A brilliant and wacky artist of Greek Rembetica music (the blues of Greek culture), George has also a keen interest in traditional American sounds’.
(Bob Brozman)

Keb'Mo' - Big Wide Grin (US 2001)

Keb' Mo' (born October 3, 1951 in South Central Los Angeles, California as Kevin Moore) is a noted American blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. In his own words, the more he got to be called Keb’ Mo’, the more he got interested in the blues .As noted from Moore himself in the Martin Scorsese series "The Blues", Keb' Mo' was greatly influenced by blues legend Robert Johnson.

http://www.kebmo.net/

Keb' Mo' started his musical career playing the steel drums and upright bass in a calypso band. He moved on to play in a variety of blues and backup bands throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He first started recording in the early 1970s with Jefferson Starship violinist Papa John Creach through an R&B group Creach hired when Moore was just 21 years old. Around that time he was also a staff writer for A&M Records, and arranged demos for Almo - Irving music. Keb' Mo's early debut, Rainmaker, came out on Chocolate City Records, a subsidiary of Casablanca Records, in 1980. Keb' Mo' was further immersed in the blues with his long stint in the Whodunit Band, headed by Bobby "Blue" Bland producer Monk Higgins. He jammed with Albert Collins and Big Joe Turner and emerged as an inheritor of a guarded tradition and as a genuine original.

In 1994, Keb' Mo' released his self-titled debut album, Keb' Mo', which featured two Robert Johnson covers, "Come On In My Kitchen" and "Kind Hearted Woman Blues," which proved his devotion for the legendary and enigmatic Johnson. This album received critical and popular acclaim. In 1996 he released Just Like You, his second album, which featured twelve songs full of Delta rhythms. He won his first Grammy award for this album, which featured very brief guest appearances from Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt[2]. On the evening of June 10, 1997, he taped a compilation of his best songs on a TV show called Sessions at West 54th. He joined musicians Laval Belle on drums, Reggie McBride playing bass, and Joellen Friedcken on keyboards to perform fourteen songs, some from each of his albums. Legendary blues pianist Dr. John also made a guest appearance. This session (known as Sessions at West 54th: Recorded Live in New York) was shown on television but wasn't released as a DVD or video until late 2000, over three years after the performance itself.
Slow Down, his next album, was released in 1998 and featured twelve songs. It earned him a second Grammy award. The album begins with the song "Muddy Water," a tribute to blues legend Muddy Waters. It also features a song entitled "Rainmaker," previously of his first album from 18 years prior. The song was rerecorded, though there is little difference to the song itself with no lyrical changes at all.

His fourth album, The Door, was released in 2000. In 2000, Keb' Mo' released Big Wide Grin, a children's album featuring many songs from Moore's own childhood, along with some newer children's songs and some by Moore himself. In 2003, veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese collaborated with many blues musicians including Keb' Mo' to put together a series of films entitled "The Blues". Following its release, several albums were released in accordance, some were compilations, some new collaborations and Keb' Mo' released an entire album himself in the series featuring a handful of existing recordings from Keb' Mo''' to The Door. On February 10, 2004, he released Keep It Simple which earned him a third Grammy award, again in the contemporary blues genre. Later that year he released his sixth studio album, Peace... Back by Popular Demand. His most recent release is Suitcase, dated June 13, 2006. His current touring band consists of Reggie McBride on bass, Les Falconer III on drums, Jeff Paris on keyboards, and Clayton Gibb on guitar..

Ronnie Earl - Grateful Heart (Blues & Ballads 1996)

Bruce Katz (Piano, Organ ,Hammond),
Rod Carey (Guitar,Bass),
Per Hanson (Drums),
Ronnie Earl (Guitar)

Neal Ward (Producer & Engineer)

Ronnie Earl (born Ronald Earl Horvath on March 10, 1953) is an American blues guitarist and music teacher.

Earl was born in New York City. He collected blues, jazz, rock and soul records while growing up. He studied music composition in college, and moved to Boston in 1975 to pursue a Master's Degree in Special Education, and teaching handicapped children. It was at this time that he attended a Muddy Waters concert at the now-defunct "Speakeasy". After seeing Muddy Waters perform in a close setting, Ronnie took up the blues guitar. He quickly began playing in the Boston blues scene.
His big break came in 1981 when he replaced Duke Robillard as lead guitarist for the Providence, R.I band,Roomful of Blues. Both Earl and Robillard were based in Providence R.I. at this time. The technically deft and musically encyclopediac Robillard took Earl under his wing. The result was a jazzy, soulful blues style, as well as his slow burn style which fans found both mesmerizing and exhilerating. He began performing solo in 1986 in addition to playing with Roomful of Blues, and he released his first solo album on the Black Top label with a quartet that focused on Blues Instrumentals, which few artists had ever attempted. After leaving the band officially he began collaborations with contemporaries Ron Levy and Jerry Portnoy, Earl King, Jimmy Rogers, and Jimmy Witherspoon. It was also around this time that Ronnie got treatment for a substance-addiction. He became a vocal advocate for sobriety, even inviting audience members to his dressing room "One Day At A Time" meetings between sets at a bar. He began teaching guitar at Berklee College of Music in 1992, and has released instructional videos. In the early 1990s he resumed touring and recording several more albums on the Black Top label. His albums primarily consist of strong instrumental compositions and traditional covers. Playing in a bars became a burden for someone who worked hard to maintain his sobriety, and an increasingly demanding touring schedule added to the stress. In the late 90's , Ronnie was diagnosed with depression, forcing him to cut back on his performances. He continued to work actively as a teacher and instructor, and also performed at facilities for the mentally ill, reaching back to his days as a special education teacher. Additionally, depression and mental illness frequently plague the most gentle and creative souls in our society

One of the finest new blues guitarists to emerge during the '80s, Ronnie Earl often straddled the line between blues and jazz, throwing in touches of soul and rock as well. His versatility made him one of the few blues guitarists capable of leading an almost entirely instrumental outfit and his backing band the Broadcasters became one of the more respected working units in contemporary blues over the course of the '90s, following Earl's departure from Roomful of Blues.Ronnie Earl was born Ronald Horvath in Queens, NY, on March 10, 1953. He didn't start playing guitar until after he entered college at Boston University in the early '70s and became fascinated with the local blues scene. Developing his craft quickly, he landed a job in the house band of the Speakeasy Club in Cambridge, MA, and changed his last name to the bluesier-sounding Earl in tribute to Earl Hooker, one of his favorite influences. Prior to the name switch, he'd made some recordings for the small Baron label under his original moniker beginning in 1977, first backing Guitar Johnny & the Rhythm Rockers, then as a founding member of Sugar Ray & the Bluetones with harmonica player/singer Sugar Ray Norcia. In 1979, Earl was invited to replace Duke Robillard in the prominent Rhode Island band Roomful of Blues, whose swinging jump blues revivalist sound demanded a jazz sensibility as well as ample blues feeling. Earl spent the next eight years with Roomful of Blues and watched their national profile grow steadily larger.Meanwhile, Earl also made a few recordings on his own for Black Top Records, forming the first versions of the Broadcasters in the early '80s. He released his first solo album, Smokin', in 1983 and followed it with They Call Me Mr. Earl in 1984 (both of those albums were later compiled on the CD Deep Blues).

Still, they were a sidelight to his main gig with Roomful of Blues, that is until he left the band in 1987 to make a go of it as a solo artist and bandleader in his own right. A new version of the Broadcasters debuted in 1988 on Soul Searchin', which featured vocalist Darrell Nulisch, harmonica player Jerry Portnoy (ex-Muddy Waters), bassist Steve Gomes, and drummer Per Hanson. Peace of Mind followed in 1990, as did I Like It When It Rains, a live album on Antone's that actually dated from 1986. 1991's Surrounded by Love reunited Earl with Sugar Ray Norcia and also proved the last in his long string of Black Top releases.By the early '90s, Earl had addressed and overcome his problems with alcohol and cocaine and began to rethink his approach. He formed a new version of the Broadcasters,
featuring organist Bruce Katz,

bassist Rod Carey, and longtime drummer Per Hanson, and boldly elected to go without a vocalist. Earl debuted his new instrumental direction -- which was more informed by jazz than ever before -- on 1993's Still River (released by AudioQuest) and embarked on a tour of Europe. He signed with the Bullseye Blues label and issued a string of acclaimed albums, including 1994's Language of the Soul, 1995's Blues Guitar Virtuoso Live in Europe (a live album from his 1993 tour originally titled Blues and Forgiveness), and 1996's Grateful Heart: Blues and Ballads
(which featured David "Fathead" Newman).

The latter two were particular critical favorites, with Live in Europe winning Pulse magazine's year-end poll as Best Blues Album and Grateful Heart doing likewise in DownBeat. Thanks to all the positive attention, Earl signed a major-label deal with Verve. His label debut, The Colour of Love, was issued in 1997 and sold more than 65,000 copies, making it one of the biggest hits of Earl's career; that year, he also won a W.C. Handy Award as Best Blues Instrumentalist. However, feeling that he was under too much pressure to move more units, Earl soured on the deal and around the same time suffered a bout with manic depression. He wound up not only leaving Verve, but taking a break from bandleading and live performance; he disbanded the Broadcasters and signed with the smaller Telarc label as a solo act. His Telarc debut, 2000's Healing Time, teamed him with legendary soul-jazz organist Jimmy McGriff. The follow-up, 2001's Ronnie Earl and Friends, was a loose, jam session type of affair featuring a number of special guests, including the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson, Irma Thomas, Luther "Guitar Jr" Johnson, and the Band's Levon Helm. In 2003, Earl returned with an album of mainly instrumental material I Feel Like Goin' On on the Canadian based label Stony Plain. A second album from Stony Plain, Now My Soul, appeared in 2004, while a third, The Duke Meets the Earl, which paired Earl with fellow ex-Roomful of Blues guitarist Duke Robillard, was released in 2005. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

HAMHOCK & SLIDE - "Cracker Blues." (US Country Folk Blues 2000)

Hamhock (Glenn Moody) and Slide (Matt Dewein) met in 1997 when their respective younger brothers introduced them. Slide recalls that they'd "sit and play at Hammy's pickin' shack in Lacrosse. The spark was there from the first chord." They cleared the slate of all other musical commitments and concentrated on developing their sound and style as a unit, and never looked back.

The primarily self-taught guitarists performed live at various well-known blues joints around North Central Florida for the next three years, road-testing their material and tightening their sound prior to entering the Sound Refinery Studios to record their debut album, "Cracker Blues." The songs were all recorded live and on the first take over the course of one weekend in 2000, and received enthusiastically positive feedback from everyone who heard the CD.
Hamhock, a skilled banjo picker and acoustic guitarist deeply influenced by such greats as Earl Scruggs and Brownie McGhee, creates a driving, rhythmic foundation for H&S's trademark "delta-style cracker blues" sound. Slide developed his melodic and intuitive style through immersing himself in the music of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Son House, and particularly Duane Allman, who Slide states as his primary influence. Robert Johnson has been another major musical inspiration for the duo.
Over the last few years, Hamhock and Slide have been keeping their fingers on the pulse of the local music scene in and around Gainesville, Florida, performing, entering and winning national music contests, and generally having a wonderful time keeping the greasy side up.
Invited to perform at Athfest 2000 on the strength of their debut album, "Cracker Blues"; they were the only Florida band playing at this annual Georgia music festival.
Winners of the 1999 National Veterans' Creative Arts competition for their original tune, "Dove," named after and written for Slide's daughter.
First and Second place Winners of the 2005 National Veterans' Creative Arts competition for their original tune, "Amarula," and Vocals on Statesboro Blues which was chosen from among more than 3000 entries.
Third place Winners Nationally 2006 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition for their original tune "Over Yonder", Chosen from among 3000 applicants
