(Sonet SLP1518Reissued on CD by Little Wing (LW 5032) in 1993 (ltd. ed. 1000) and on an unknown label with two bonus tracks, "In A Simple Way", "Ride Across My Bed", NL001. )

Robert Lelievre had previously played folk music in the trio Cy, Maia & Robert, while the Puggaard-Muller brothers came from the blues-rock group Delta Blues Band. Their collective past gave no indication of the sophisticated sound of Pan. The band's eponymous album is one of those tightly-arranged and strictly produced efforts, polished to make Lelievre's songs shine. Most of the tracks blend various styles of rock, folk, jazz and small drops of classical and gospel into a strong and potent brew - it strikes me each time I hear it just how homogenous and forceful it is. Knowing the entertainment business, it will come as no surprise that such an intelligent and emotional album met little commercial success. Disenchanted, the group broke up within months. Robert Lelievre attempted to establish a solo career but Sonet left a completed 1971 album unreleased. It was scheduled for release in 1980 on Sonet's series of double album re-issues (coupled with the Pan album), but this re-issue programme was terminated due to low sales, and it didn't make it onto vinyl this time either. This is symptomatic for a man who'd had plenty more bad luck in the past. After his 1968 album with Iain Campbell, he had completed an album (helped by Brian Auger and John McLaughlin, amongst others) for Giorgio Gomelsky's Marmalade label. For unknown reasons, it was never released. Lelievre committed suicide in Copenhagen 26th August, 1974. An ignorant world lost one of the most talented songwriters of his generation.

"Pan On The Air" was released by Karma Music in 2004, and features live Pan recordings from two separate 1970 Danish Radio shows, produced by Erik Moseholm and Freddy Hansson. CD re-production by Tomrerclaus, with extensive liner notes from Claus Rasmussen. The tracklisting includes the following five original Robert Lelievre compositions: "Far Away From Home", "Freedom", "Time", "Deliverance", and "If I Was Another Man", plus one song written with Niels Skousen - "From A Tree". The band also play a cover of Woody Guthrie's "I Ain't Got No Home (Ramblin' Man)", and the traditional "I Cannot Keep From Crying". Lambchop - What Another Man Spills (US 1998)

Lambchop, originally Posterchild, is a band from Nashville, Tennessee. Lambchop is loosely associated with the alternative country genre, though its music resists easy classification. The music website Allmusic refers to them as "arguably the most consistently brilliant and unique American group to emerge during the 1990s". Never a band with a "core" lineup, Lambchop through the years has consisted of a large and fluid collective of musicians focused around its creative centre, frontman Kurt Wagner. Initially indebted to traditional country, the music has subsequently moved through a range of influences including post-rock, soul and lounge music.

Whatever the style, the characteristic mood of Lambchop's music is evoked by Wagner's distinctive songwriting - lyrically subtle and ambiguous, the vocals melodic but understated. Setting this apart from other minimalist songwriters is the large group of backing musicians, with the range of instruments and styles that it brings. Wagner's songwriting bears similarities with soul musicians such as Barry White, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye as much as with country and folk music, and can be seen to embody Kris Kristofferson’s dictum that “country music is the white man’s soul”.(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Don Sugarcane Harris - 1973 Cup Full Of Dreams[Harvey Mandel & Tongue & Groove]

Biography

Beginning his career as the guitar playing half of the 1950s rock duo, Don & Dewey, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, put down the guitar and picked up the violin after the lack of success for Don & Dewey (oddly enough the group's songs became hits for other artists such as the Righteous Brothers and the Premiers).

Classically trained as a violinist, Harris' skill at improvisation began attracting attention from the rock world and soon he was appearing on records by John Lee Hooker, Frank Zappa and Johnny Otis. In 1970 Harris joined forces with British blues musician John Mayall when the latter was forming his first all American backing band.

In addition to joining the backing bands of Mayall, Zappa and others, Harris also recorded a series of albums for labels such as Epic and Polydor. After a lengthy battle with pulmonary disease, on December 1, 1999 he was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment at the age of 61.

Blues violinist Sugarcane Harris is on fire during this 1973 studio session for BASF, which features many of his regular collaborators of the period.

Harris, who wrote all of the material heard on the date, mixes elements of jazz, country, and rock into his brand of blues. He is brilliant in the midtempo blues "Runnin' Away," though none of the solos that follow measure up to the leader's. "Hattie's Bathtub" is a catchy blues waltz. But it is the extended composition "Cup Full of Dreams" that showcases Harris' lyricism on his instrument.

One amusing aspect of the LP is the obvious presence of guitarist Harvey Mandel, who evidently could not be named for contractual reasons, though his photo is barely disguised with an old-fashioned black bar over his eyes.

Just a few years after this record was released, poor health put an end to the violinist's career. Sadly, this record is long out of print and somewhat hard to find.

Deva Premal (born in 1970 in Nürnberg Germany), is a musician known for her meditative spiritual New Age music, which puts ancient Sanskrit mantras into atmospheric, contemporary settings.

Deva has toured since 1991, along with her life partner, Miten, offering concerts and chant workshops worldwide. Their record company, Prabhu Music, reports sales of over 900,000 albums.



Best-known for her top-selling chant CDs, Deva Premal is a classically trained musician. She grew up singing mantras in a German home permeated with Eastern spirituality. Her albums have topped the New Age charts and popularity polls in yoga studios and healing centers throughout the world since her first release, The Essence, featuring the Gayatri Mantra. Her latest album, Mantras For Precarious Times, which features Deva chanting seven different mantras 108 times each, was created as a support for mantra meditation. She and Miten have also recently released a CD/DVD In Concert: The Yoga of Song and Chant, featuring a concert recorded live in Byron Bay, Australia with Nepalese bansuri flautist Manose.

Deva and Miten performed for The Dalai Lama during a 2002 Conference in Munich, Germany on Unity and Duality, which brought top figures from the scientific community together with members of the Buddhist community. They gave a concert for the full conference, and were also invited to sing for the Dalai Lama at a small pre-conference gathering. They had heard that his favorite mantra was the Tara Mantra, dedicated to the Green Tara of Compassion, and that he had asked for it be chanted recently when he was ill, and so they chanted it for him.

Deva began her journey with mantra in her mother's womb, as her father chanted the Gayatri Mantra, one of most sacred mantra of Hinduism, to her daily, and it continued to be her bedtime lullaby after she was born. Many years later, she heard a friend singing the Gayatri and was inspired to put together an album featuring it. She and Miten recorded The Essence in her mother's apartment in Germany, the same one in which she was born and where her parents had sung the Gayatri Mantra to her years before.



Deva brought this journey with the Gayatri Mantra full circle in July, 2005, when she and Miten chanted the Gayatri for her father as he was dying: "We kept singing for what must have been over half an hour, when suddenly the monitor showed that he was about to leave. I continued to sing and the last sound he heard as he passed on was his beloved Gayatri Mantra. Finally we ended with the mantra Om and the circle was complete. He had welcomed me onto this planet with the Gayatri and I accompanied him out of this physical existence with it. What a blessing this was for me! It was the first time that I was present at a death, and to be at my father's is a memory I will cherish all my life.
