κάποιοι θα ελπίσουν.. Σε τι;

Δεν ξέρουν, όπως δεν ξέρουν σε τι πιστεύουν, που πατούν και που πηγαίνουν.

Biography
Guitarist, educator and historian Steffan Grossman was a student of acoustic blues and gospel singer/guitarist Rev. Gary Davis. Beginning when he was 15, Grossman studied with Davis on weekends, spending eight to ten hours at his house in Harlem, absorbing all he could. After studying with Davis for eight years in high school and college, he learned and studied with other country blues guitarists: Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Skip James, Mance Lipscomb and Fred McDowell. Other early influences for Grossman included Elizabeth Cotten, Sam McGee, Willie Brown and Charley Patton.

In the early 1960s, Grossman formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and worked with the political rock band the Fugs before moving to Great Britain. In 1968, he co-founded Kicking Mule Records with Ed Denson, a label that showcased idiosyncratic acoustic blues and folk guitar styles. The co-founders dissolved their partnership in the mid-1980s, but Kicking Mule's catalog was purchased by Fantasy Records. Some of the vinyl sides have seen the light of day on compact disc. From 1967 to the early 1980s, Grossman lived in Great Britain, where he carved a reputation on the European blues and folk festival circuit, playing with British-raised acoustic guitarists like John Renbourn and John Fahey.

Grossman's solo discography goes all the back to 1966, when he recorded How to Play Blues Guitar for Elektra Records. Since the early 1980s, when Grossman began a long relationship with Shanachie Records of Newton, NJ, he has toured infrequently, but recorded extensively. Recent albums include Northern Skies, Southern Blues (1997), as well as Love, Devils and the Blues (1992) Guitar Landscapes (1990) and Shining Shadows (1988) for the same label. Grossman's sessionography includes recordings with the Even Dozen Jug Band (which also included such future luminaries as John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur and David Grisman), as well as albums by Paul Simon, John Fahey, Charlie Musselwhite and Happy Traum. He also helped Shanachie launch their Guitar Artistry imprint series, which showcases such artists as himself, Renbourn and Traum.Based in northwest New Jersey, Grossman concentrates his efforts these days on running his instructional video business, Vestapol Videos. His videos feature guitarists from Merle Travis and Chet Atkins to Dave Van Ronk and Brownie McGhee. He remains one of the world's foremost authorities on acoustic blues guitar. ~ Richard Skelly, All Music Guide

Sam Mitchell, Mike Cooper & Stefan Grossman
Released during the peak of the mid/late-'60s folk boom, Stefan Grossman's debut, How to Play Blues Guitar, finds a young guitarist paying his respects to the music that inspired him. A student of Reverend Gary Davis (and later Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt among others), Grossman learned his blues from the source. Here, his fluency is proven through a tour of country-blues melodies and themes from standard fare like "Corrina, Corrina" to three James numbers and Grossman originals rooted in the tradition. He is joined by an amicable cast of instrumentalists and vocalists that share the stage on the majority of the material. The most suited of the group is multi-instrumentalist Sam Mitchell who fleshes out Grossman's effortless, syncopated fingerpicking with ever pertinent melodies from his own mandolin, fiddle, and slide guitar. The vocal tracks that make up the bulk of the performances are fine, though rarely more than reverential, ranging from the authentic replications of Jo ...Ann Kelly to the dry but steady work of Mike Cooper and Mickey Baker. The notable exceptions are the contributions from Delta blues great Son House on "Yonder Come the Blues" and "New Pony Blues." Essentially a remake of "Walking Blues," the former proves that, over 30 years after he made his first recordings, the singer was still capable of wringing new emotions out of a well-worn theme. Occasional instrumentals represent Grossman's early attempts at incorporating the blues vernacular into a six-string style of his own. Though one might not know what to make of a title like "Assassination of John Fahey," the composition finds Grossman closest to achieving those ends. Though the album's 23 performances may fail to cohere as an album per se, they serve as a document of the guitarist's roots while pointing the way to his future explorations.(Nathan Bush, All Music Guide)@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Liverpool Scene
Appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969.
Liverpool Scene were known for their inspired and innovative joining together of music and poetry.
The band were suppoirted by London DJ John Peel who produced and promoted their first LP in 1968. In 1969 they went on to open for Led Zeppelin release a second LP and tour the USA. The tour of the USA inspired a third and final LP, the band split up in 1970

from the alternative Liverpool band that included famous Liverpool Poet Adrian Henri. Recorded between 1968/9, these albums are an eclectic mix of pop, folk, beat poetry, and proto progressive psychedelia. Members later played with Brand X, Grimms and Plainsong,THE WAY WE LIVE ,TRACTOR ,showing the range of musical influences represented here. Produced by John Peel.

The Liverpool Scene
The Liverpool Scene was a poetry band, which included Adrian Henri, Andy Roberts, Mike Evans, Mike Hart, Percy Jones and Brian Dodson. It grew out of the success of The Incredible New Liverpool Scene, a CBS LP featuring Henri and McGough reading their work, with accompaniment by the guitarist Roberts. Liverpool DJ John Peel, who was then working on the pirate radio station Radio London, picked up on the LP and featured it on his influential late-night Perfumed Garden show. After Radio London closed down, Peel visited Liverpool and met the band; as a consequence, they were featured in session on his BBC Top Gear and Night Ride shows, and in 1968 he produced their first LP. Four LPs were issued with Henri's poetry heavily featured.
Despite Peel's support the albums achieved little success, although the band did become popular on the UK university and college circuit. Their public performances included a 1969 tour when they opened for Led Zeppelin; they also toured the USA but did not attract much acclaim from US critics and audiences. Henri was described in performance as "bouncing thunderously and at risk to audience and fellow performers, the stage vibrating out of rhythm beneath him."[2]
The albums were:

Liverpool Scene - 1968 - Amazing Adventures Of (UK psych)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~@~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was as much a mixed media project as a group comprised of leading Liverpool musicians and poets. Their act and songs were full of satirical humour. Their debut 45, Son Son, basically consisted of an inquisitive child asking a parent all the questions one doesn't want to be asked. John Peel soon became a fan and they were a popular band on the underground circuit - their reputation being aided by an acclaimed appearance at the 1969 Isle Of Wight Festival. Of their albums, the second was the best but overall their music rarely matched the quality of their lyrics.
Roberts left in the early seventies to help form Plainsong and also put out some solo albums. Hart embarked on a solo career. Roberts and Henri later played together with McGough in Grimms
Stuart Godfrey recollects. I remember very clearly seeing Liverpool Scene at the Bath Festival in 1969 and they were BRILLIANT - even in the exalted company of Led Zeppelin, John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Harper, The Nice (to name but a few) they really got the festival buzzing - Adrian Henri was an amazing front-man who very nearly wrecked the stage with some ill-advised leaps (he was a big guy). Less clearly I seem to recall they had a guitarist name of Andy Roberts??? who made some pretty strong solo albums.
I did get to meet Adrian Henri and Roger McCough at a poetry reading in Hereford and they were really nice guys; Henri had this uncanny ability of balancing one full beer-mug on his belly while downing another. As a thin guy, I found this very impressive.Ah, memories...Stuart (thanx too)
PEARLS BEFORE SWINE - 1970 - The Use Of Ashes (US psych folk)
The Use Of Ashes was the fourth album made by Pearls Before Swine, and the second on Reprise Records after their move from ESP-Disk. After recording the album These Things Too, the other original founding members of Pearls Before Swine had all left, and leader Tom Rapp and his then wife Elisabeth moved to her home country of the Netherlands (travelling on the maiden voyage of the QE2 liner) to live for several months near Utrecht. Most of the songs on The Use Of Ashes were written there. They were recorded back in Nashville in March 1970, with some of the city's top session musicians, many of whom formed the basis of the band Area Code 615.
Many of Rapp's admirers regard this, and particularly the first side of the original LP (tracks 1 through 5), as the finest and most consistent of all his albums.
The opening track, "The Jeweler", with its refrain of "He knows the use of ashes / He worships God with ashes", came to him when he saw his wife cleaning a piece of jewelry with a paste made from ashes, and is generally regarded as one of his finest and most poetic songs. A version was later recorded by This Mortal Coil. The next track, "From the Movie of the Same Name" is largely instrumental, featuring David Briggs' harpsichord and, like all the tracks, is beautifully and sensitively arranged. "Rocket Man" is based on a Ray Bradbury story (in his book "The Illustrated Man") about an astronaut and father burning up in space, but also draws on Rapp's difficult relationship with his own father and the fact that, in his teens, he lived near Cape Canaveral in Florida. The song itself inspired Bernie Taupin's lyrics on Elton John's hit of the same title. Another highlight, "Song About A Rose", again shows Rapp's ability to convey metaphysical thoughts within an artfully arranged song, with the lyrics "And even God can only guess why or where or when or if the answers all belong / And you and I we sing our song about a rose / Or perhaps the shadow of a rose".
A different texture is provided by the jazzy "Tell Me Why," shimmering with vibraphone beneath Rapp's whimsical lines.
The song "Riegal" was inspired by reading a newspaper article on the wartime sinking of a prison ship, when 4,000 prisoners drowned. Later histories suggest the number may have been out by 1,000 odd souls, but the sinking remains one of the worst maritime disasters ever[citation needed], and the song remains one of the most achingly beautiful evocations of the perils of going down to the sea in ships. Rapp does not apportion blame, indeed the lyric gives credit to the German, but probably not Nazi, captain who apparently saved many lives by grounding his ship. Rapp's juxtaposition of stark imagery reveals that while Pearls Before Swine might not have continued the more bombastic direction set about on their earlier protest songs "Uncle John" or "Drop Out," they maintained social and political relevance. The final track, "When The War Began", contains an equally potent message on the futility of war.
Additional material from the Nashville sessions was released on the next Pearls Before Swine album, City of Gold.
The sleeve design shows a late 15th century French or Flemish tapestry, "The Hunt of the Unicorn: vi, The unicorn is brought to the castle", from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It shows three huntsmen bringing down a unicorn with spears and swords. The sleeve continued the group's approach of using classic art on their album covers, started with their debut album One Nation Underground.
A single, "The Jeweler" / "Rocket Man" (Reprise 0949), was issued from the album.
In 2003 The Use Of Ashes was finally issued on compact disc as part of the Jewels Were the Stars compendium, anthologizing Pearls Before Swine's Reprise Records output.
A Dutch group[1] formed in 1988 out of the rock band Mekanik Commando took the name "The Use Of Ashes", inspired directly by the Pearls Before Swine album.(Wikipedia)
