Dom - Edge of Time - 1971- German Psychedelic (Krautrock)

an interesting melange of psychedelic,

cosmic and folk music
in a rather dark and low key meditative atmosphere.
A hypnotic and ecstatic blend of space rock, eccentric hippie folk and Eastern mantra .
(from my favourite krautrock classic treausure Jem!)

"You will meet me there at the edge of time
the fire-sea licking my feet
gas and damp,
wind and rain,
snow, heat, waters, ice and pain
damned souls cry "forgiveness!"
the past will be future and future will be past
not one thing in our world that will ever last
only you and me
until eternity shall that spirit
one containing two
wander through space and peace we knew"
(From "Edge Of Time")

(*Bonus Track)

This is hard to distinguish from the original, but it is dubbed from disc and has inferior sound quality. A legal CD re-issue with good sound quality appeared in 1991 on Witch & Warlocklimited to 500 numbered copies. (lobotomy NOTE: pristine release by Second Battle in 2001)
A group originating in Dusseldorf. The von Baksay's escaped from Hungary in 1956 and settled in Dusseldorf. The band Dom came into existence in 1969 and performed live at Cream Cheese, the city's leading club for rock music.
Their private pressing Edge Of Time was recorded in 1972 at the Neubauer studio.
Featured on the album were four long and mostly instrumental tracks. It was an interesting melange of psychedelic, cosmic and folk music in a rather dark and low key meditative atmosphere.
"Introitus" (8:50) opened the album in an almost spooky way with acoustic guitars, flute and hand percussion. Later in the track an organ created a spirited mood akin to the vintage Pink Floyd's "Cirrus Minor".
"Silence" (8:46) was a sinister trip into deep space with organ, unintelligible voices, acoustic guitar, electronic effects and flute.
"Edge Of Time" (9:01) sounded as if Kalacakra and Tangerine Dream jammed together out in space. The spoken lyrics of the track summarize the trippy mood of the whole album:
"Dream" (9:33) concluded the album much like the quiet parts of Floyd's "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" and "Quicksilver".
Edge Of Time is unreservedly recommended for all fans of the early Pink Floyd (ca. 1968-69) and Tangerine Dream (ca. 1971-75)the first Siloah album ,Kalacakra's "Crawling To Lhasa", Agitation Free,Ash Ra Tempel and Amon Duul's "Paradieswarts Duul". style.
"Dom" was the groups reference name for an acid trip that lasted for two days.

Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (Virgin Records 1975)

The word ommadawn appears to be related to the Irish word amadán meaning or "idiot" or "fool". This interpretation is consistent with Clodagh Simmons pre-translation english lyrics of the gaelic chant at the end of the first movement:Daddy's in bed, The cats drinking milk, I'm an idiot, And I'm laughing

Colosseum is a British jazz fusion band considered also a part of the early roots of progressive rock. The band formed in 1968 with founding members drummer Jon Hiseman, tenor sax Dick Heckstall-Smith (who died December 2004) and bass player Tony Reeves. All three had previously played together in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Dave Greenslade (organ) was immediately recruited, and the line-up was completed by Jim Roche (guitar). Roche only recorded one track before being replaced by James Litherland (guitar and vocals).
Colosseum made their live debut in Newcastle, and were promptly recorded by influential BBC Radio One DJ John Peel for his Top Gear Radio program. This appearance gained them valuable exposure and critical acclaim.
Colosseum's first album "Those About To Die Salute You" was released by label Fontana in 1969. Colosseum's second album, their second release in 1969, was Valentyne Suite, and is arguably the band's best. It is well-known as the first album release from the label Vertigo Records, which also first signed heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath. Vertigo Records was a branch of the Philips brand to sign and develop artists which may not fit the Philips Records brand.
After the second album, James Litherland was replaced by Dave "Clem" Clempson for the 1970 album, The Grass Is Greener, which was oddly released only in America. Tony Reeves was then replaced by Mark Clarke, and Jon Hiseman recruited Chris Farlowe to enable Clempson to concentrate on guitar. This is considered by most fans to be the definitive line-up. They recorded the 1970 release Daughter of Time.
In March 1971, the band recorded a gig at the Big Apple in Brighton, followed by one at Manchester University. Hiseman was impressed with the atmosphere at the Manchester gig, and the band returned five days later for a free concert which was also recorded. the recordings were released as a live double album in 1971, shortly before the original band broke up.
After Colosseum split Jon Hiseman formed Tempest with bassist Mark Clarke, Dave Greenslade formed Greenslade with Tony Reeves, Clem Clempson moved to Humble Pie, Chris Farlowe to Atomic Rooster and Dick Heckstall-Smith did his solo career.
Colosseum has had a couple of different sets of band members (and, when it split and then oriented further towards jazz-fusion rock with a totally new lineup, renamed itself Colosseum II with guitar ace Gary Moore, percussion from Jon Hiseman, the keyboards of Don Airey).

A reunion tour for Colosseum happened in 1994, which was the catalyst for a CD release and new studio releases. After the reunion Colosseum also released expanded editions of Valentyne Suite and Colosseum Live, as well as several compilation albums.
Hiseman's wife, saxophonist Barbara Thompson, joined the band on various occasions after the death of Dick Heckstall-Smith and is now a permanent member of the band.

Lucia Hwong - House of Sleeping Beauties (1985 Private Music)

house of sleeping beauties - all music guide review
In 1985, Lucia Hwong showed a great deal of promise on her debut album House of Sleeping Beauties, which acknowledges the composer/arranger's Asian heritage but isn't traditional Asian music. Rather, this LP finds Hwong (a Chinese-American from Los Angeles) combining Asian music (Chinese and otherwise) with new age and ambient elements. Creatively, House of Sleeping Beauties was a step forward for both Asian music and new age. It demonstrates that Asian music doesn't have to live in the past, and it is more interesting and stimulating than a lot of the new age releases that came out in the mid-'80s. Much of the new age from that period was not meant to be stimulating; the whole idea was to offer calm, soothing, peaceful music that would help listeners to unplug and chill out. But while House of Sleeping Beauties is calm and peaceful enough to attract new age audiences, it doesn't lull the listener to sleep — quite the contrary. From the extended "Tibet Suite" to "Dragon Dance" and "The Spell," this album is far from mindless. Hwong's hypnotic instrumentals are consistently intriguing; on this debut, the L.A. resident demonstrated that synthesizers could sound perfectly natural alongside traditional Asian instruments (which Hwong does not use in a traditional way). In the 1990s, new age/world fusion became increasingly common, but for 1985, House of Sleeping Beauties was quite daring and challenging — certainly by the new age standards of the mid-'80s. House of Sleeping Beauties isn't Hwong's most essential release; nonetheless, she shows a great deal of imagination on this 1985 debut.
